Tourism Arrivals Rise 10 Percent as Eswatini Enters Major Events Season

Eswatini’s tourism industry recorded solid growth in April 2026, with new statistics pointing to increased visitor confidence and stronger economic activity ahead of the country’s peak events season.

Figures released by the Eswatini Tourism Authority show that the Kingdom recorded 99,884 arrivals in April, representing a 10.1 percent increase compared to April 2025. South Africa continued to dominate regional arrivals with 56,259 visitors, while Mozambique and Zimbabwe also posted strong numbers. Overseas markets were led by the Netherlands, France, and the United States.

The positive performance follows heightened economic and tourism activity generated by the recent 40/58 celebrations, which attracted visitors from across the region and boosted demand for accommodation, transport, retail, and entertainment services.

The tourism sector is now preparing for another major economic injection through the upcoming MTN Bushfire Festival, which has increasingly become one of the country’s most valuable tourism assets. Independent studies show the festival contributes over E121 million to the Eswatini economy annually while attracting more than 23,000 attendees from over 55 countries.

Analysts say the latest tourism figures indicate growing momentum for Eswatini’s strategy to position tourism and the creative economy as key drivers of economic diversification. The average stay of 2.1 nights recorded in April is also viewed positively, particularly for hospitality operators seeking longer visitor retention and higher tourism spending.

Emerging markets such as Zambia, Lesotho, and Brazil are also beginning to feature in the country’s tourism mix, signalling broader international visibility for the destination.

Government and private sector stakeholders have repeatedly highlighted the importance of festivals and cultural events in stimulating economic activity, creating employment opportunities, and supporting SMEs. Recent remarks made during the Bushfire 2026 launch noted that tourism, arts, and culture are becoming increasingly important pillars of economic growth in Eswatini.

With the MTN Bushfire Festival expected to attract thousands of additional visitors later this month, businesses in hospitality, transport, food services, and retail are anticipating another strong trading period.

The latest tourism performance suggests that Eswatini’s events-led tourism strategy continues to deliver measurable results while strengthening the country’s reputation as a competitive cultural tourism destination in the region.
