Sakhile Mamba has developed Commute; a mobile application that allows car owners to make money by selling extra car seats in their personal cars to any interested passenger heading to the same destination at a predetermined time.
The application is available on Google Play Store and is currently free for Emaswati to use for three months.
The founder states that the ride-sharing app is the right service at the right time given rising fuel prices and the high inflation that economies are currently experiencing. Furthermore, he points out that it is a great way to fully utilize the capacity of personal vehicles while looking out for the environment.
The local entrepreneur who has also founded MPW Store, an online grocery store, says that the app was born out of his observation that it is inefficient to make daily return car journeys alone in a 4-seater vehicle between the country’s two major cities Mbabane and Manzini. Moreover, the current challenging economic climate convinced him that a ridesharing app was now more than ever a necessary service for Emaswati.
For only E100 per month, drivers wishing to use the app need to first register with Commute by providing their particulars including their national identification, driver’s license as well as the details of their vehicles. Once their accounts have been verified, they are able to begin making money by setting their starting point, destination, and departure date and time on the app where interested passengers can express interest in their ride. Passengers use the app for free.
Speaking on passenger safety features, Sakhile Mamba states that the application requires a national ID card and driver’s license to be uploaded on the app to keep track of participation and where necessary assist authorities with investigations regarding the misconduct of users. He also indicates that there are more safety features to come including using ratings and comments to better spot problematic users.” I also intend to set up a department dedicated to filtering out those with violent criminal records.” He adds.
The application is available for download in more than 177 countries worldwide. It will soon also be available in the Apple store.
