In a move poised to transform Eswatini’s trade landscape, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade has issued a statement, announcing a pivotal visit by His Excellency Wamkele Mene, Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Scheduled for 30-31 May 2024, this visit aims to engage with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including representatives from micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as women and youth groups, to leverage the AfCFTA for unparalleled economic growth and inclusivity.
The dialogue aims to explore how Eswatini and other AU Member States can harness the trade agreement as a development catalyst within the current global economic context to ensure development amidst the ever-changing geopolitical and economic alignments.
Moreover, Mene is set to interact with current and aspiring traders to highlight the advantages of exporting within the AfCFTA framework. This initiative aims to capitalize on the vast opportunities offered by the extensive continental market, which is home to a population of 1.3 billion and a collective market value of US$ 1.3 trillion.
According to the Minister of Commerce Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, this engagement aims to involve all players who are currently involved in the export of goods and services, as well as those who are willing to explore this avenue.
“The AfCFTA offers more than just market access; it also addresses critical issues such as Intellectual Property, Competition Policy, Digital Trade, MSMEs, and the participation of women and youth in trade. These factors are essential in facilitating trade and ensuring inclusivity for the benefit of all emaSwati,” Khumalo said.
The Ministry encourages all relevant stakeholders to prepare for this visit and seize this unique opportunity to contribute to the economic development and growth of Eswatini through the AfCFTA.
