Former Cabinet Minister Moses Vilakati has landed a role as the first Eswatini African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Sustainable Development and Blue Economy of the African Union (ARBE).
Vilakati’s appointment has generated considerable excitement across the nation, especially given his extensive experience leading the Ministry of Agriculture.
The role of the ARBE Commissioner is crucial, as it involves shaping agricultural policy, spearheading rural development initiatives, and advocating for sustainable practices on the African continent.
Vilakati’s academic credentials were also not to be ignored as they featured an MSc in Agriculture (International Development) from California Polytechnic State University, USA, along with a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Eswatini.
This strong educational foundation was complemented by a diverse and accomplished career, which included serving as Minister of Agriculture in 2013 and later as Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs from 2018 to 2023. His versatility across various sectors highlighted Vilakati’s commitment to sustainable development.
Vilakati’s professional journey also included significant roles such as Project Director at the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE), Agribusiness Development Manager at EWADE, and a Project Director and Lecturer at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA).
In a show of solidarity, the government has also publicly expressed its full support for Vilakati’s new role.
“Vilakati’s appointment is a recognition of his impactful leadership and deep expertise in agriculture, environmental conservation, and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices,” he stated.
The Government of Eswatini also extended its heartfelt gratitude to the 36 African nations that have recognized Vilakati’s capabilities and deemed him a worthy candidate for this significant responsibility.
“His Majesty’s Government has full confidence that Mr. Vilakati will uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in his new role at the African Union,” added Nxumalo.
