Southern Star Logistics Donates Computers at Manzini Nazarene Practising Primary School

Southern Star Logistics, in partnership with Business Eswatini (BE), has donated computers to Manzini Nazarene Practising Primary School, strengthening learners’ access to information and communication technology (ICT) and hands-on digital skills at primary school.

The donation includes 28 desktop computers, 7 laptops, and 15 monitors, along with technical support to help the school set up a functional computer network. The initiative aims to enhance practical ICT learning and prepare students for a technology-driven future.

Speaking during the handover, Southern Star Logistics Managing Director Nicholas De Waal said the donation was inspired by the need to expose learners to practical computer skills at an early age.

“When the ICT teacher explained that he teaches the practical side of computing without enough computers, it really stood out to us. Learners need to open a computer, identify the motherboard, remove it, and reinstall it. That is how real learning happens,” said De Waal.

He explained that the donated equipment was no longer compatible with the company’s upgraded business systems but was still valuable for educational use.

“As technology advances, businesses upgrade their systems. These computers run older versions that no longer support modern business software. However, in a school environment, they are ideal tools for learning,” he said.

De Waal said the donation extends beyond equipment, noting that Southern Star has committed to an ongoing partnership with the school. Learners will be responsible for repairing and rebuilding non-functioning computers during practical lessons.

“We made a pact with the ICT teacher that in one month, learners will attempt to rebuild some of the computers. He will then give us a list of spare parts required, and we will donate those parts so more computers can be assembled for classroom use,” he added.

He further commended ICT teacher Mndeni Langa, whose initiative was instrumental in securing the donation. “This project would not have happened if it were not for Mr Langa. He travelled from Big Bend during his leave to meet us and clearly explained how his learners would benefit. That level of dedication is what makes a real difference,” said De Waal.

Private sector should play more active role- BE

BE Chief Executive Officer E. Nathi Dlamini described the donation as a critical intervention in preparing young learners for an increasingly digital economy.

“The entire economy, now and into the future, will be run by computers. If we do not expose our children to ICT early, we are setting ourselves up for failure as a country,” said Dlamini.

He said BE is encouraging the private sector to take a more active role in societal development, particularly in education and digital transformation.

“As BE, we are calling on the private sector to identify opportunities to contribute to society. Today, we are pleased that Southern Star Logistics has responded to that call by supporting a primary school, where the foundation for future skills is laid,” he said.

Dlamini added that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to support digitalisation and automation across sectors, noting that Business Eswatini continues to collaborate with its members on community-focused projects nationwide.

Manzini Nazarene Practising Primary School Principal Vusie Gama expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as an investment in the learners’ future rather than merely a contribution of equipment.

“This donation empowers our learners with hands-on experience, including fixing and refurbishing computers. These skills are critical for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” said Gama.

He said the donation complements the school’s strong academic performance, noting that the school recently produced the top Grade 7 learner nationally, alongside 39 Excellent passes, 45 Very Good passes, and 16 Good passes.

“We are proud of our academic achievements, and this support strengthens our vision of using technology to enhance learning and learner success. We thank Southern Star Logistics for believing in education, innovation, and the potential of our learners,” he said.
