The Ministry of Information, Communications, and Technology (ICT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Embassy of the United States to strengthen and expand the American Corners initiative within Eswatini.
Launched 12 years ago, this initiative promotes youth engagement, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy at the Mbabane and Manzini public libraries. It offers free access to digital resources, educational programmes, and tools for personal and professional development.
These spaces have transformed the lives of thousands of emaSwati, equipping them with skills and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.
Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Ministry’s conference room, Principal Secretary, Phesheya Dube, highlighted the importance of American Spaces in enhancing access to information, promoting youth engagement, fostering entrepreneurship, and bridging the digital divide.
He emphasized that the cooperation aligns perfectly with the Ministry of ICT’s Digital Transformation Agenda, particularly the “Government in Your Hand” initiative, which aims to provide emaSwati with access to information and services anytime and anywhere.
“These centers enhance digital literacy, contribute to bridging the digital divide, and promote a more informed and inclusive society,” Dube said.
Over the past years, the American Corners in collaboration with the Eswatini National Library Services, located at the Manzini and Mbabane National Libraries, have had a significant impact as hubs of knowledge, innovation, and personal development.
These spaces have become vibrant centers for youth engagement, with visits rising from 21,556 in 2023 to 33,902 in 2024. They focus on developing the next generation of leaders by providing mentorship opportunities, entrepreneurship workshops, digital literacy training, and fostering creativity and innovation.
U.S. Chargé d’ Affaires, Caitlin Piper, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of American Spaces for Eswatini’s youth.
“We are excited about the opportunities available through American Spaces,” she said.

“This partnership is not just about access to resources; it’s about creating a future where young people can lead, innovate, and inspire change in their communities. The US Embassy will continue to work closely with the Eswatini National Library Service to develop programmes that nurture the next generation of business leaders, support Eswatini’s growing creative economy, and strengthen the digital landscape.”
The strategic objectives of the American Spaces network for the next two years include:
Developing the Next Generation of Business Leaders: American Spaces will provide mentorship, resources, and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to build successful businesses and contribute to Eswatini’s economic development.
Strengthening the Creative Economy and Digital Skills: Programmes will focus on enhancing digital skills, creativity, and innovation, empowering young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Promoting Student Mobility to the U.S.: Through scholarships, exchange programmes, and educational initiatives, American Spaces will provide opportunities for Eswatini’s youth to study in the U.S., fostering cultural exchange.
Enhancing Alumni Engagement: American Spaces will serve as a platform for alumni of U.S. government programmes, helping them stay connected and continue their personal and professional development.
Sakhile Shabangu, the American Spaces and Experimental Learning Coordinator, shared statistics from recent years, noting that in 2023 alone, American Spaces organized 317 programmes, reaching 17,424 beneficiaries, while in 2024, they hosted 228 programmes, benefiting 4,719 individuals.
“American Spaces are cultural and educational centers sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, offering a variety of programmes and services that promote cultural exchange, education, and community engagement,” he explained. “Located in both Mbabane and Manzini public libraries, these spaces are crucial in providing access to information, technology, and opportunities for the youth to engage with global trends.”

Since its inception, American Spaces in Eswatini has made tremendous strides in expanding its reach. From 2012 to 2019, programme attendance grew steadily, with a total of 87,174 beneficiaries across 1,301 programmes. In 2023, the engagement continued to grow, with 317 programmes reaching 17,424 individuals.
This upward trend continued into 2024, with 228 programmes and 4,719 beneficiaries.
Additionally, total visits to American Spaces rose from 21,556 in 2023 to 33,902 in 2024, reflecting the increasing demand for resources, mentorship, and opportunities at these centers.
