Grindrod celebrated the second anniversary of its Bassopa Safety Culture Campaign across its facilities in eSwatini, Mozambique, and South Africa last week, bringing together employees, contractors, and strategic partners, including longstanding collaborator Eswatini Railways (ESR). The event featured vibrant cultural performances, personal testimonies, and awards recognising those who exemplify safety and live the company’s values daily.

At the same event, Grindrod introduced The Grindrod Way, a newly established framework focused on driving business growth and operational effectiveness through a people-centric approach. Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk Division, commented, “We are proud to present The Grindrod Way, an integrated model aimed at advancing both customer and operational excellence, while consistently prioritising safety, ethical standards, and our organisational Purpose.”

Mkhululi Dlamini, Head of Operations, eSwatini and Sidings, commented: “Our project has successfully moved nearly 4 million tonnes of cargo from Sidvokodvo to the Port of Maputo, delivering close to four years of injury-free operations. This achievement represents more than 60 vessels routed through the eSwatini corridor and the direct support of nearly 200 local transporters. Beyond logistics, the project has delivered meaningful socio-economic impact, from road tolls paid at the border, fuel purchased at local stations, and increased activity across both formal and informal businesses, to the employment of close to 100 Emaswati. We remain steadfast in our commitment to partnering with stakeholders across eSwatini as we collectively drive the country’s export-led growth strategy.”

Since its launch in 2023, the Bassopa campaign has delivered a 62% reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and a 47% improvement in LTIFR, driven through structured closeout processes, peer accountability, open communication, and proactive near-miss reporting.

The Grindrod Way encapsulates Safety, Values and Ethics, Customer Excellence, Operational Excellence, and Recognition. The framework is set to further strengthen the culture and performance of the business.
