The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, has announced a comprehensive review of the Construction Industry Policy, Act, and Regulations.
The announcement was made at the Construction Industry Council (CIC) Stakeholder Forum last week Thursday, at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel.
The Forum brought together a diverse group of industry stakeholders comprising government officials, and industry executives to discuss pertinent issues affecting the industry to ensure a fair and level ground for local construction industry stakeholders and promote active and efficient participation in the local industry.
The review process began in September 2023 and is set to be completed by the end of April 2024. It aims to address gaps and enhance the effectiveness of the Construction Industry Regulatory Framework. The Minister called for active participation from all stakeholders in this review process, highlighting its importance in shaping the future of the industry.
The government’s proactive approach is expected to have a positive impact on the sector’s growth trajectory, leading to improvements in local and foreign investment, commerce, and trade, ultimately creating wealth and employment opportunities for more emaSwati.
The Minister encouraged stakeholders to fully participate in the review process to create a harmonious construction industry.
“It is for the aforementioned, therefore, that we encourage you all to commit to actively participate in this review process, as it presents the means of addressing identified gaps and further improvement of the effectiveness of the Construction Industry Regulatory Framework,” he said.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a sustainable and equitable contracting environment that promotes fair work opportunities for emaSwati. Recognizing the socio-economic significance of the construction industry as a catalyst for development, the Minister urged industry entrepreneurs to diversify their business sources and tap into international and private sector project opportunities.
Acknowledging the challenges faced due to the government’s fiscal position and global economic dynamics, which have led to a decline in construction works and delayed payments, the Minister inspired confidence in the prospects of the built environment.
