Eswatini is Pregnant with Opportunities but Instant Gratification Is a Major Challenge- Zizwe Vilane

Zizwe Vilane says that Eswatini has vast opportunities for the youth in various sectors, but instant gratification seems to be a major challenge.

Vilane provides consultancy services on investment and trade opportunities in Eswatini and on the African continent.

He disclosed this during the ‘Positivity Series podcast’ hosted by Nathi Gule. During the conversation titled ‘Positivity in Opportunities’, Vilane highlighted many opportunities that exist in sectors such as tech, AI, big data, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.

Vilane said working with partners they have developed programmes for the youth who need opportunities. He made an example of the Eswatini Youth Empowerment Programme (EYEP). The EYEP is a youth empowerment partnership initiative between the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that aims to empower the youth with opportunities, skills, and resources to pursue their dreams and aspirations.

Vilane also touched on initiatives such as the iHub by Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO), which is a physical space that provides networking and mentoring opportunities for young entrepreneurs. He, therefore, encouraged the youth to make use of the programme.

“For those young people who want to be the future Elon Musk, come through let’s empower you,” he said.

However, according to Vilane, the attitude of Emaswati makes these opportunities seem valueless.  He says from years of experience having worked with empowerment organizations and structures, he realized that the youth want instant benefits from what they do.

“When it comes to young people, the biggest threat is simply instant gratification ‘I want to benefit now’ and yet the reality is: that time and sacrifice is what will take you somewhere. So, we need people to think around that,” he said.

He encouraged the youth to be visible, be present, and show up, and the rest will come into play.
