‘Anticipated Water Shortages Due To Low Water Levels In Rivers and Dams’

By Eswatini Water Services Corporation

Eswatini, like many other countries, is increasingly experiencing the effects of climate change, which puts added pressure on our water resources. In full appreciation of this, Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC) has over the years been implementing capital projects aimed at responding to probable water scarcity.

Among these initiatives is the refurbishment of the Mbabane Treatment Plant, which will boost water supply to essential areas, including the Mbabane Government Hospital, Government Offices, and the Central Business District (CBD). This upgraded plant, with a capacity of 5 megalitres, plays a pivotal role in ensuring consistent water delivery. The Government of Eswatini and the Corporation have further concluded designs for the Nondvo dam which presents an opportunity for raw water storage.

Additionally, dredging operations at the Mbuluzi River have increased the abstraction capacity, improving the pump station’s efficiency, which now ensures a reliable water flow to Woodlands. A dual-sourcing strategy for Ezulwini has also become operational with the Mbabane system interlinked with Ezulwini and Lobamba systems.

This not only optimizes supply efficiency but also provides a backup plan, reducing the risk of supply disruption. A key intervention that is in progress is the Luphohlo Water Treatment Plant which will provide at least half of the required daily demand of Mbabane city

Some of these projects have been successfully completed, while others remain ongoing as part of EWSC’s long-term water management strategy.

The dire water levels in our raw water sources require concerted efforts from all water users to use water sparingly. Water conservation is not just an immediate necessity but a long-term responsibility.

By taking proactive steps, such as reducing water wastage in daily household activities and addressing leaks promptly, each of us can help preserve our water supply. Reducing water use now will help avoid future shortages and maintain the resilience of our water system.

We kindly request the public’s cooperation in adopting water-saving habits and reporting any leaks or water-related concerns promptly with the Corporation’s reporting platforms, toll-free 8005000, and through Temanti on Whatsapp 78065000.

The Corporation remains committed to managing water resources efficiently and relies on collective efforts to ensure a sustainable supply of water for the nation.

Water-Saving Tips That Can Help Conserve Water

  1. Fix Leaks: Regularly check and fix any leaking taps, pipes, or toilets. Even small drips can waste large amounts of water over time.
  2. Shorter Showers: Limit shower time to reduce water usage. Aim for a 5-minute shower.
  3. Turn Off Taps: When brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your hands, turn off the tap until you’re ready to rinse.
  4. Use a Bucket for Washing Cars: Instead of using a hosepipe, wash your car with a bucket and sponge. If you must use a hosepipe, fit it with a nozzle that controls water flow.
  5. Water Plants Wisely: Water plants in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation. Also, consider using greywater (used water from sinks, showers, or washing machines) for watering plants.
  6. Use Full Loads: Only run your dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load to maximize water efficiency.
  7. Cover Pools: If you have a swimming pool, use a cover to prevent water loss through evaporation.

By incorporating these simple habits into daily routines, everyone can contribute to conserving water and ensuring a more sustainable supply for future needs.
