The Imbube Marathon, powered by the Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF) and partners, goes beyond being a platform for athletic excellence but is also a tourism enabler and a celebration of health and community.
The Imbube Marathon set to take place on October 6, 2024, continues to play a holistic role in the country’s socio-economic development. ENPF’s Chief Executive Officer Futhi Tembe, said the tourism value chain continues to grow through Imbube Marathon’s international participants and supporters.
She said that in the past the event has attracted participants as far as the United Kingdom.
Since its inception in 2015 under the patronage of His Majesty King Mswati III, the Imbube Marathon has grown exponentially. Initially unveiled during the launch of Sivuno House, the event has transformed into Eswatini’s premier running event, attracting over 6000 participants in 2023. The marathon’s scenic route makes it a beloved national tradition that unites people from all walks of life.
Tembe emphasized the importance of this event in fostering a sense of community and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“The Imbube Marathon has become a symbol of health, community spirit, and athletic excellence. It brings together thousands of participants and spectators, celebrating athletic achievements and promoting health and fitness even in old age,” said Tembe.
A significant milestone for the Imbube Marathon was its international accreditation by the World Athletics Association in 2023. This accreditation elevated the marathon’s status and allowed it to serve as a qualifying race for other prestigious international events.
The marathon’s inclusion as a qualifier for the renowned Comrades Marathon further solidifies its position on the global stage, attracting elite athletes from around the world.
Commitment to Inclusivity
Inclusivity is a core principle of the Imbube Marathon. The event is designed to provide a platform for athletes of all abilities, with a notable increase in disabled athlete participation each year. In 2023, over 200 athletes with disability took part, showcasing the marathon’s commitment to fostering an environment that encourages and celebrates all participants, regardless of their physical condition or experience.
“The Imbube Marathon is for everyone. We are dedicated to providing a platform where athletes of all abilities can compete and feel celebrated,” said Tembe. This inclusive approach ensures that the marathon remains a true community event, reflecting the diverse and vibrant spirit of Eswatini.

Partnering for Success
The success of the Imbube Marathon would not be possible without the generous support of its sponsors. Standard Bank has been instrumental in maintaining the high standards of the event and this year made a substantial contribution of E350 000. Old Mutual has also been a steadfast partner, increasing its sponsorship to E75 000 in 2024.
“The contributions of our sponsors are crucial in ensuring a world-class event that benefits all participants and the community at large. We are deeply grateful for their unwavering support.”
Opportunities for Sponsorship
As the Imbube Marathon continues to grow, companies have numerous opportunities to get involved and support this prestigious event. Sponsorship packages offer exceptional brand exposure to a large and engaged audience. From sponsoring water points to providing items for goodie bags, companies can enhance their brand image while contributing to the well-being of the Eswatini community.
The call for additional sponsors and partners is more pertinent than ever. This event offers a unique opportunity for companies to associate their brand with health, fitness, and community support. With sponsorship packages tailored to meet various marketing objectives, the marathon provides an ideal platform for businesses looking to make a positive impact.
The ENPF and its current partners have laid a strong foundation for the marathon’s success. However, additional support is essential to reach new heights and continue providing a world-class experience for participants. Companies interested in participating in this inspiring event are encouraged to contact the ENPF to explore sponsorship opportunities.
“Sponsoring the Imbube Marathon is not just about brand exposure; it’s about being a part of a movement that promotes health, fitness, and community spirit. We invite more companies to join us in this journey and make a lasting impact,” said Tembe.
