New Eswatini-UN Steering Committee to Drive 5-Year Development Results

The Government of Eswatini and the United Nations have officially launched the Joint National Steering Committee (JNSC), a body that will oversee the implementation of the 2026–2030 Government–United Nations Cooperation Framework aimed at accelerating sustainable development in the country.

The committee was officially commissioned during a meeting held at the UN House in Mbabane, bringing together senior government officials, development partners, civil society, academia, the private sector, and members of the UN Country Team.

Speaking during the meeting, United Nations Resident Coordinator George Wachira said the JNSC would serve as the main oversight platform responsible for ensuring accountability, coordination, and delivery of development results aligned with Eswatini’s national priorities.

“The committee represents the partnerships required to deliver sustainable development and ensure that implementation remains focused on impact,” he said. The meeting also reviewed and adopted the Joint Workplan that will guide implementation of the Cooperation Framework over the next two years.

Minister of Economic Planning and Development Dr. Tambo Gina co-chaired the session alongside the UN Resident Coordinator. Wachira said the new Cooperation Framework was developed through extensive consultations between August 2024 and October 2025 and focuses on two strategic priorities, two outcomes, nine outputs, and 41 measurable indicators.

He noted that the framework reflects a shift towards more focused and strategic interventions capable of producing measurable impact. The UN official also stressed the importance of accountability in implementation. “A good document is only as good as its implementation. The task before the Steering Committee is to ensure that together we make a difference in the lives of EmaSwati,” he said.
