The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM), Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mvilawemphi Dlamini says spectrum fees will be affordable for the purposes of 5G technology in the country.
The CEO was speaking during the launch of the 5G technology by MTN Eswatini, at Mahlalekhukhwini House on Friday. He said the fees of the spectrum was something they had reviewed a lot. “The commission has been proactive in taking into consideration the high bandwidth requirements for 5G in the review of the spectrum pricing framework for 2021. This will make the spectrum fees for 5G to be relatively the same as previous network generations. As a result, when this technology is finally deployed nationally, the pricing will not be a deterrent for mobile network providers” he noted.
Moreover, Dlamini noted that the introduction of 5G technology will help improve the country’s digital economy. He said 5G will be the country’s connectivity infrastructure and will help foster industrial and societal transformation. He observed that 5G had network infrastructure that is easy to utilize, as well as the ability to be used for a number of things.
Additionally, the CEO noted that nowadays everything requires data. “The digitization of our economy in society is accelerating with the Internet of Things (IoT), where the connectivity of this billion devices exchange data every second. It is then essential to mention that this requires a new generation of communication networks in the country”
The CEO concluded by stating that one of the most important aspects of 5G technology is the fact that it is very fast. He said this technology will address the latency issues of speed and utility which earlier generations could not address. For instance, the CEO said 5G will provide data speed a rate a hundred times faster than 4G networks. The network will also transmit data almost instantly with a network latency of less than ten milliseconds.
