Q. Please kindly introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to pursue a career in fashion design.
A. Thank you for having me. My name is Lungile Tengetile Dlamini, a 35-year-old fashion designer originally from Lobamba. I hold a Certificate in Fashion Design and Home Craft from the National Handcraft Training Centre in Ezulwini (2016/2017). I am the founder of Mezzo Designs, a Manzini-based company that specializes in designing and creating clothing for both men and women, with a primary focus on women’s fashion.
Mezzo Designs creates a wide range of garments, including corporate wear, Ankara/Shweshwe designs, wedding gowns, prom dresses, graduation outfits, and custom-made pieces tailored to each client’s specifications.
My passion for fashion design stems from my mother, who worked at a fabric store and used her sewing machine to create clothes for us and sell, including traditional Swati bridal dresses (tidziya), headscarves (emaduku), and food-covering nets. Watching her sparked my interest in sewing, and I began learning at home.
Q. Who are your biggest influences in the fashion industry, and why?
A. My biggest influences are Gert-Johan Coetzee and Otiz Seflo, renowned designers from South Africa. I admire these two remarkable designers because they embrace challenges and consistently create breathtakingly beautiful designs. They have an incredible ability to craft pieces that perfectly align with the theme of any event, resulting in creations that are extraordinary, elegant, and truly captivating.
What sets their work apart is their uniqueness, precision, and exceptional attention to detail. Their designs are not only visually stunning but also stand out for their quality and craftsmanship. I see a reflection of my aspirations and vision in their work, and they continue to inspire me to push boundaries in my designs.

Q. How do you differentiate yourself in such a competitive industry?
A. I pride myself on being the best detailer, especially when it comes to beadwork and an unmatched explorer in the industry. If you’re looking for a designer who can think deeply and creatively to bring your vision to life, I’m your go-to person. Whatever design you need, I ensure it’s delivered with precision, impeccable detail, and beautifully packaged for a first-class experience. As my brand proudly says, “#WeTheBest”—and I truly live by that!
Q. How would you describe your design aesthetic? Can you walk us through your creative process, from idea to final product?
A. I see my designs as true works of art that captivate attention and leave people in awe. Each piece is unique, with intricate detailing that invites admiration. Before starting any design, I consult with my client about the event, ensuring the design suits their body shape and the desired statement. I help select materials and, if needed, assist with fabric shopping. Once everything is finalized, I take precise measurements to begin the creation process.
Creating an outfit takes 3-5 days, depending on complexity. I draft patterns, cut fabric, and sew with attention to detail, ensuring a neat and professional finish. After a fitting to ensure the perfect fit, I make final adjustments, then press, fold, and package the outfit for pickup. This process guarantees that every client receives a unique, expertly crafted garment.
Q. Who have been your biggest clients and what have been your biggest and proudest moments?
A. I’ve had the honor of designing for some remarkable individuals, including songstress Nomalungelo Dladla, gospel artist Make Nelisiwe Siwela, the Spirit Quest gospel group, Princess Vusiwe Dlamini, Inkhosikati Make LaDvuba (wife to the late Prince Phinda, former chairman of the University of Eswatini Council), the current Registrar of the University of Eswatini, Mrs. L. Nhlabatsi, and Ms. Sibonsile Gamedze, a health practitioner, to name just a few.
One of my proudest moments was seeing my design showcased at the 2024 Bushfire Festival, where Nomalungelo Dladla performed with Siyinqaba, a Hip Hop group, wearing one of my creations. It was humbling to know my work was seen by thousands worldwide. Equally rewarding are the moments when clients wear my designs to prestigious events and proudly mention my name when complimented. It’s an incredible feeling to have people of such high calibre trust and celebrate my work.
Q. Have you collaborated with other designers or brands, if yes, what did you learn from those experiences?
A. I’ve collaborated with Heritage Hut, founded by Tebenguni Mkhatshwa, the company specializes in upcycled accessories and functional pieces, such as earrings, bracelets, traditional sandals, and ottoman seats made from reused materials like car tires. One of their standout collections uses ‘khonzekhaya’ bags to create unique outfits, where I bring the concepts to life by refining designs and ensuring they’re runway-ready.
This collaboration has taught me that fashion thrives on creativity and flexibility, by exploring unconventional materials and keeping an open mind, any material can be transformed into a stunning outfit that achieves the desired outcome.
Partnering with other brands like Heritage Hut has expanded my creative horizons. Sharing ideas and working together often leads to phenomenal designs that wouldn’t have been possible individually.
Our collaboration has been showcased at prestigious events, including the MTN Bushfire Festival 2024, the Global African Fashion Coalition 2024 in Soweto, South Africa, and The Runway Revolution 2024 at Malkerns Square in Eswatini. These platforms have highlighted the incredible possibilities of sustainable and innovative fashion.

Q. What are your long-term goals as a fashion designer?
A. My long-term goal is to take Mezzo Designs to the international stage, showcasing my creations on global runways, and designing for both local and international celebrities. I also aspire to design for businesswomen, both locally and abroad, while supplying corporate wear to companies. What’s closest to my heart, however, is mentoring young designers. I want to guide and inspire them to excel in the fashion industry, helping them create unique, outstanding designs and become leaders in their craft.
Q. Are there any new materials, techniques, or concepts you’re eager to explore?
A. Yes, there are new materials I would love to explore. Unfortunately, our local fabric shops often limit us, as they take time to stock new and trending materials. As a result, we, as designers, often have to travel to South Africa to source these materials.
Q. What’s your favorite piece you’ve ever designed, and why?
A. My favorite design is the black lace evening boobtube dress with butterfly-back chiffon wings and a half-over skirt that I wore to last year’s Jumbo Dinner Festival.
