Speaking at the Earth Hour commemoration held at House on Fire in Malkerns, Galp Eswatini’s Country Manager, Bruno Lourenço Marques, emphasized the urgent need for action on climate change, describing it as a current reality rather than a distant concern.
“The transition to a sustainable energy future is not only desirable—it is inevitable. It is a central pillar of our business strategy,” Marques stated. “As you may already know, we are determined to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and we have a clear roadmap to pursue these goals. So far, we have achieved a 30% reduction in emissions compared to our baseline, and we are investing in innovative, low-carbon solutions to provide zero-emission options for our customers.”
Galp operates 24 filling stations across Eswatini and is recognized as one of the leading integrated energy companies in the world. It has consistently ranked at the top of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global benchmark that evaluates companies based on economic, environmental, and social sustainability criteria.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index serves as a global ranking that assesses the sustainability performance of companies based on economic, environmental, and social criteria. It highlights leading companies in their commitment to sustainable practices and how they manage risks and opportunities related to sustainability.
It is essential to clarify that the 30% emissions reduction was achieved by Galp globally, of which Galp Eswatini is a part. This milestone reflects the company’s broader sustainability efforts across all its markets, including Eswatini.
Marques expressed pride in this achievement, underscoring the company’s dedication to addressing climate challenges while continuing to innovate within the energy sector.

“As we continue to navigate the challenges ahead, our company remains committed to sustainability. The impact of Earth Hour grows each year, raising awareness across the nation about the importance of sustainable practices. Every year, we witness remarkable achievements in energy savings, and today, we are confident that we will set new records.”
Reflecting on the broader environmental challenges, Marques pointed out that rising greenhouse gas emissions have reached critical levels, leading to extreme weather events and significant biodiversity loss. He called for collective action, urging individuals and businesses to embrace sustainable solutions.
“Let us reflect on the challenges facing our planet, but also on the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead,” he concluded.
