Local businesses and farmers in Eswatini now have the opportunity to have their products certified under the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) at no cost, a move designed to enhance competitiveness and facilitate access to both regional and international markets.
The Executive Director of the Eswatini Standards Authority (SWASA), Ncamiso Mhlanga, revealed this during a panel discussion at the Standards Seminar held at the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre.
He explained that ARSO will cover all costs associated with the certification process, including product testing, training, and consultancy support where necessary. “They’ve called us, given us the forms to fill, and will cover the full cost of certification,” said Mhlanga. “Whether you are just starting or already established, we will take your product through the full certification process.”
ARSO is a continental body that harmonizes standards across Africa, ensuring that certified products meet internationally recognized benchmarks. Products carrying the ARSO mark are not only compliant locally but are also accepted in markets across the African continent, opening doors for Eswatini’s businesses to trade seamlessly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The announcement comes ahead of new legislation expected to make product certification mandatory in Eswatini. Mhlanga warned that products that are not certified will no longer be allowed on domestic markets, making this free ARSO certification programme a critical opportunity for businesses to align with the law and safeguard their operations.

“We want to support you and ensure public safety without disrupting your operations,” he said.
Certified products will gain credibility, traceability, and reliability, enhancing consumer confidence while meeting health and safety standards. Mhlanga encouraged interested businesses to register immediately to take full advantage of the programme before the legislation takes effect.
“This initiative is not only about compliance; it is about positioning Eswatini’s products to compete confidently on the continental and global stage,” Mhlanga emphasized.
With uncertified goods expected to be restricted from both domestic and regional markets under the upcoming legislation, this ARSO certification programme provides a timely pathway for local producers to future-proof their businesses, protect consumers, and unlock new trade opportunities.
