CIC and UNESWA Partner to Equip Eswatini Builders with Renewable Energy Technology Skills

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has partnered with the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) to launch a training programme on solar panel installation and maintenance.

The programme targets contractors, technicians, and young graduates, particularly from TVET institutions.

The course, scheduled to begin in the upcoming months, seeks to develop the local skills needed to integrate renewable energy solutions into construction projects.

“This is more than just technical training, it’s an investment in our future workforce,” said CIC Chief Executive Officer, Maqhawe Mnisi, during the recent Construction Industry Stakeholder Forum.

“By empowering the industry to adopt solar and other renewable technologies, we’re helping the country reduce its carbon footprint while creating jobs.”

This initiative forms part of a comprehensive climate strategy developed by CIC in response to suggestions from last year’s industry forum. Key components include incorporating climate risk assessments into construction planning, promoting low-carbon building materials, and enforcing environmental standards in both public and private sector projects.

Mnisi emphasized that sustainability should now be regarded as a business necessity.

“We are no longer operating in a world where climate change is a distant threat. The industry must adopt solutions that ensure the long-term viability of our infrastructure,” he stated. “That means changing our building practices, training approaches, and mindset.”

Through these reforms, CIC aims to foster a sector that not only meets infrastructure goals but also aligns with Eswatini’s National Development Strategy.
