Eswatini Marks World Metrology Day 2026

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Trade’s Metrology Section today joins the global community in celebrating World Metrology Day 2026. This year’s commemoration drops under a powerful, timely theme: “Building Trust in Policy Making” (when decisions are measured, trust follows).

Observed annually on May 20, the day marks the 1875 signing of the Metre Convention, the historic international treaty that established worldwide cooperation in measurement science and laid the groundwork for a uniform, globally recognized system.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the global standing of metrology, the science of measurement and its application, reached a historic milestone in November 2023 when the UNESCO General Conference officially endorsed its annual celebration. This high-profile backing aligns perfectly with international efforts to leverage precision science and innovation for sustainable global development.

This year’s theme highlights a fundamental truth in modern governance: you cannot manage what you do not measure. Accurate, reliable, and internationally traceable measurements are the invisible backbone supporting effective policy development, regulatory decision-making, and consumer protection.

Metrology enables policymakers to make transparent, credible, and enforceable decisions that actively foster public trust and economic stability by providing the rigid scientific evidence and technical confidence required.

“Every day, scientific and legal metrology work together to ensure that measurement systems support consumer protection, fair trade, industrial efficiency, and regulatory compliance,” reads the statement in part.

“From ensuring accurate accuracy in all measurements in trade, i.e. fuel and energy measurements, to supporting transport safety, environmental monitoring, healthcare systems, and market transactions, metrology provides a trusted foundation for decisions that affect citizens, businesses, governments, and international cooperation”.

Within the Kingdom, the Metrology Section continues to drive market fairness and compliance through the rigorous implementation of two critical pieces of legislation, namely, the Legal Metrology Act No. 25 of 2023, and the Measurement Unit and Measurement Standards Act No. 19 of 2023.

The Metrology Section remains strictly committed to safeguarding this infrastructure by verifying commercial weighing instruments, protecting consumers from unfair practices, maintaining national SI unit standards, and boosting industrial competitiveness.

“As Eswatini advances its national development agenda, industrialization efforts, and participation in regional and international trade, the importance of reliable measurements continues to grow,” it reads.

“Accurate measurements are essential in building trust between government, industry, and consumers, while ensuring transparency, fairness, safety, and economic confidence”.

According to the ministry, the vital importance of precision measurement becomes undeniably evident during global health crises. “Accurate metrology is an absolute requirement in medical diagnostics, vaccine production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, oxygen delivery systems, and the precise calibration of lifesaving medical equipment. Reliable data ensures evidence-based public health decisions, significantly improving patient outcomes and national crisis readiness”.

As the nation marks this day, the Metrology Section extends its gratitude to government institutions, regulators, industry partners, and consumers for continuously strengthening Eswatini’s national quality infrastructure.

Together, through precise and trusted measurements, the nation can continue building unshakeable confidence in policymaking, creating a rock-solid foundation for sustainable growth, public safety, and national prosperity.
