Business Eswatini (BE) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) aimed at fostering harmony at the enterprise level, promoting job creation, and eventually increasing minimum wages in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The signing of the MoU took place at the BE headquarters at Emafini. Speaking at the event, BE CEO, E. Nathi Dlamini, highlighted the importance of the partnership with TUCOSWA.

“The creation of more jobs is a goal we are committed to achieving. Together, BE and TUCOSWA will help the government shape policies that are conducive to investment retention in the Kingdom. It is important to note that while the government creates policies, it may not have the same reach as our organizations. This MoU strengthens our collective influence, allowing us to work on new policies that can grow the Kingdom’s national aspirations, even amidst the geo-political challenges faced globally,” Dlamini explained.

The CEO highlighted the importance of open dialogue, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to progress, which will lead to tangible benefits for both businesses and workers, as well as the broader economy.

He also pointed out that the partnership is crucial for adapting to the ever-changing dynamics of the labor market as Eswatini navigates shifting economic trends.

“We are working together toward a common goal of reducing unemployment in the Kingdom. If we create more jobs, TUCOSWA will grow its membership, and businesses will thrive. This will help us advise the government to make better policies. Our ultimate goal is to grow the economy and support national aspirations. Renewing this memorandum is a vital step toward rebuilding the Kingdom’s economy and creating jobs,” Dlamini stated.

TUCOSWA President, Bheki Mamba also spoke at the signing ceremony, stressing the urgent need for job creation in Eswatini and the challenges faced by young graduates in the Kingdom.

Mamba expressed concern over the high levels of unemployment, particularly among young graduates, some of whom have been seen begging for employment on the streets.

“It is disturbing to see young graduates, like the recent young lady covered in the media, pleading for jobs. This is a major issue in the Kingdom, and as leaders, we must prioritize job creation and work together to address this problem. We also aim to ensure that all employees in the Kingdom receive a suitable minimum wage,” Mamba stated.

He called for greater collaboration among all stakeholders to tackle the issues of unemployment and minimum wage increases.

“We need this partnership to help create more jobs. Everyone must come together to improve the economy, which will bring benefits like better social services, including healthcare, social grants, and education—essential for the well-being of the Kingdom’s citizens,” Mamba emphasized.
